Chapter 1
After spending the night with the air stewardess, I was ready to travel home, checking out of the hotel, I drove home and 3hours later I was parking outside my flat and minutes later collapsing on the sofa, exhausted from the journey, exhausted from the night and exhausted from the US trip and my time with Summer.
I hadn’t been home for long when my phone buzzed, picking it up, it was Susan.
“Hiya, and welcome home; I’d love to hear all about your trip when you’re free.”
I read it and smiled, it sounds awful, but I’d almost forgotten about her while I was away; I mean, I don’t owe her anything, we’re not an item, but I do like her, and I want to see her, so the text was lovely, she clearly wanted to see me.
“Hiya, the trip was amazing thanks, not as expected but amazing never the less; I’d love to catch up; I’m pretty knackered, so we can either catch up tomorrow, or if you fancy coming here tonight, we can grab some food and have a bottle of wine’ I replied
The response was almost immediate.
“That sounds great; I’ll bring the wine; what time?’
“How about 7 pm’ I responded and then added my address
I then curled up on the sofa and fell asleep; I hate jet lag!
I awoke naturally at about 6, not quite sure where I was or what the time was; I needed a shower to wake myself up; I’d blown my earlier idea of cooking a casserole by falling asleep so it would be taken out when Susan got there, I showered and changed into some joggers and a T-shirt, not dressing up at all, I just wanted to relax tonight and have a few drinks.
Not long after I sat down on the sofa the intercom buzzed, it was Susan, so I let her into the elevator and moments later she was walking into the flat, I got up to meet her, and as she walked in I was surprised and a little guilty, I had slobbed down, but she had dressed up and had full makeup and hair done, she was yet again not dressed in a feminine way, wearing khaki trousers and a nice white blouse but she did look nice, probably the best I’ve seen her.
‘Wow, don’t you look good? I’m sorry now I didn’t make an effort,’ I said laughing.
She laughed
“Oh, it’s ok, you could be wearing your worst clothes and still look beautiful’ she replied with
‘Awe, thanks,’ I said feigning a blush
“I also have to apologize, I fell asleep and haven’t done any food, so it’ll have to be takeout’ I added
“Great company, takeout, and wine, that sounds like a perfect night’ she said laughing; that was the second flirt of the night
I took the bottle of wine off her and put it in the fridge, taking out a cold one and pouring two large glasses, passing her one as I walked back into the living area.
‘So what do you fancy tonight” I said to her.
‘Well, there are a few things, but I’d guess you’re talking about food?” She said smiling
Fuck me! She was coming on strong; I smiled back and raised my eyebrow in acknowledgment of the flirting.
Sitting down on the sofa with our wine, I ordered some Pizza. We started to chat about the marathon, as I relived every step of the way, every site I passed, every band playing on the route. She sat there listening to me, hanging on to every word. I loved talking about it, we were rudely interrupted by the pizza delivery driver buzzing the intercom, so I went to collect it.
When I came back, Susan was refilling the wine glasses, and we grabbed our slices of pizza and sat back down on the sofa, eating and drinking our way through the rest of the marathon.
“So you said on the text it was unexpected, but you hit the time you were hoping for, so what was so different?” Susan asked me
“Well, that’s a whole different story,” I said, laughing
“Well, I’m all ears,” she said
“Ok, well, I think we’ll need more wine,” I laughed as I got up and took a fresh bottle out of the fridge.
“That good, eh!” She joked
I sat down on the sofa and promptly told Susan about meeting Summer but first I went back in time to tell her about how we’d met and what had happened right up until we broke up; I didn’t hide anything and frequently refilled the glasses as I took Susan through the last two years of my life, she looked shocked at times, sad at other times and as I then caught up and told her about New York and then San Francisco she hung onto every word and didn’t even interrupt, I couldn’t tell from her body language if she was impressed, appalled or sexually excited by my story.
The story was now up to yesterday...skipping the air stewardess story.
“So, that’s why the trip was so unexpected; I’d planned to catch up with friends in both cities but not in that way,” I explained.
She looked at me, smiling politely but not saying anything.
“So, have you got any questions? Have I scared you away?” I asked tenderly
She just sat there looking as if she was deciding what to do next; I couldn’t tell where this was going when she stood up and moved towards me, sitting down next to me and putting her arms around me.
“Oh, I’m so sorry for you; it sounds heartbreaking,” she said as she looked me in the face; her hand lifted to my face and touched my cheek.
“I’d like to get to know you a lot better; I came here tonight hoping that we would be if you’re not over Summer, then I’ll wait,” she added with a soft, caring voice.
I smiled
I leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips before raising my hand and touching her face; I kissed her again before moving back.
“I’d like that,” I said. “I was over Summer until I met her again, she was the first love of my new life, so she’ll always have a place in my heart, but that shouldn’t stop me from moving on,” I explained.
“Good,” she said before hugging me again.
We fell back against the back of the chair and just lay there in each other’s arms, nothing sexual about it; she was different; it sounds cruel to say that I didn’t find her as sexually attractive as some of the people I’ve met, but I liked her, I liked the feeling I got around her, and I felt comfortable with her.
I picked up the remote, switched the TV on, channel surfed, and found a film we both wanted to watch that was just starting; I repositioned myself and lay there on the sofa, my head resting on her lap; she played with my hair and teased my shoulders and neck with her fingers, she didn’t have any fingernails, so it felt different, it was lovely, it was cute, I just lay there until I fell asleep, not exactly what you want on a date. However, I was still jetlagged and so so comfortable.
I haven’t a clue how long I was sleeping, but when I woke, all the lights were off, so I was past midnight; I was still lying on Susan, who herself was fast asleep, as I moved, she woke up.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry for falling asleep,” I said to her
“Oh honestly, it’s fine, it was adorable, and I was happy sitting there admiring you,” she said
I smiled
“Bed?” I said to her as I stood up
“We don’t have to if you’re not ready,” she said, looking up at me.
I reached my hand down to her. “I want to,” I said as she took my hand, and I led her into the bedroom.
